Symptoms of headaches and migraines

People with headaches may also experience muscle pain, stiffness, limited range of motion and limited mobility. People who experience migraines may suffer from sensitivity to light or sound, nausea or vomiting, distorted vision, and scalp tenderness. People who experience migraines may also see things in their vision, like large shapeless blobs, either before, after or during their migraines.

Causes of headaches and migraines

There are many causes of headaches and migraines. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Stress can contribute to headaches by causing the muscles of the neck and back to tighten. This muscle tension can cause pain to radiate to the scalp, forehead, or jaw.
  • Whiplash is a strain or sprain of the muscles and ligaments in the head and neck. It often happens with injuries like car accidents or falls.  Inflammation of the injured soft tissues can refer pain to the head, shoulders, and arms.  Weakness of the injured muscles and ligaments can also cause this type of pain.
  • Sports injuries can lead to strains, sprains, concussions and other forms of damage to the body that can cause inflammation and muscle tension that contributes to headaches.
  • Poor ergonomic conditions at work. Sitting or looking down at a computer screen for hours on end can cause the neck muscles in the spine to stretch and fatigue, which then causes tightness and trigger tension-type headaches.
